River had first made sure her rats werenât still scared. They were busy grooming, completely oblivious to what had just happened. She then spent a lot of time trying to set up the crystals like she remembered. The Old Man hadnât stayed long at all. Sheâd said thank you to the dog and felt horrible about yelling at it and calling it names. But if it wasnât the Old Manâs, why was it here? Sheâd never heard of a good ghost dog, only horrible ones. Demon dogs, black dogs that were omens of death, Crystal Falls werewolves, which everyone made jokes about in townâ¦
Slamming her hand down on the ground, tears of frustration welled up in her eyes, she gave up. It had to have been a whole hour that sheâd tried to get everything right, but she could tell it wasnât. And Tonya had specifically said not to touch the crystals more than to recharge them and put them back because it drained the energy faster. Humans used up the energy of crystals. Stronger ones could be worn and there was a balancing act between charging and recharging. But River didnât know anything about being a witch or their craft except the stupid stuff on Supernatural. That was her one hang up with the show. Living in Fulton Hills where there were covens practicing in the open and solitary witches advertising in the papers for cleansing work, she knew not all witches were evil and cursed people.
The downside was that it took years of study to get magic right. She leaned against the wall, her knees to her chest, the heels of her palms pressing to her eyes, trying so hard not to be mad at stupid Kevin. He was just a brat. He didnât understand what he had done. He just saw his older sister get new stuff and he wasnât supposed to touch it.
Telling him not to touch something was like telling a compass not to point north. It went against the very nature of the thing.
Besides, he was sitting in the chair. Usually it was ten minutes, but Mom had been really mad and so had he. When he got mad he refused to sit in the chair. Mom and Dad were not spankers and said River used to be like Kevin but that the chair had worked for her. So it would work for Kevin.
River didnât think there was anyone like Kevin. The terrible twos had turned into the terrible threes.
He loves me.
That he did. When he wasnât being a jerk he could be really nice. Most of the time shared with her when they played with his toys and he always wanted to play with her. He slept with her at night if he got scared. When sheâd been crying when her parents told them they were moving, heâd brought her his favorite bear, ToughButt, and sat with her on her bed, patting her head and face like Mom did to him when he was sad.
